In 2000 Germany passed the first legislation on the prioritization of renewable energy sources (Gesetz für den Vorrang Erneuerbarer Energien – EEG), which supported the expansion of renewable energy. The most important elements of the law was i) that electricity produced by wind turbines was favored by a high feed-in tariff fixed for up to 20 years and ii) that the German utility companies were obligated to purchase all electricity produced by wind turbines.
